Its time to make your garden live with cedar garden furniture. The garden furniture made of cedar wood includes chairs, tables, engravings, leisure and gazebows. Even though these can be made of other types of wood, the advantage of using cedar is that it lasts long and can be used for ages. Since cedar is a soft and sturdy wood it can be crafted easily into any desired shape through skilled labor and work manship .You can get rare and excellent designs with cedar wood. Apart from the look and elegance, cedar furniture is water and chemical resistant. They are also immune to insert and termite attack. Their insect repelling quality is mainly due to the oil which they secrete. The insects don’t like the smell of this oil and therefore they avoid Cedar woods.

Cedars can also withstand climatic and seasonal changes. They are very light and you can easily shift them at your will, and this doesn’t require any labor. Their extreme lightness makes them portable. You yourself can move your garden furniture without the fear of it being damaged. Always Kiln dry wood is a better option than the green wood. The use of kiln dried cedar wood minimizes twists, cracks and provides guarantee for a long-term use. So when you order your garden furniture set, its preferable to mention the name, kiln dry Cedar wood to the manufacturer. The advantage in using hand crafted wood is that the designs can be changed even at a later point of time. They may give the best natural look to your garden and nothing can match your exemplary garden style. Unique designs are also available in Cedar furniture and you can choose the one that best satisfies you.

The cedarwood furniture could be made use of in both indoor and garden furniture. Its natural creamy white texture shines silver gray in the sun and the look alone takes you to your dream world. Nothing can be a competitor to Cedar than another one of the same kind. They can be used in your kitchen cabinets. They make cooking interesting and you find yourself spending more time in kitchen than in your living room. They are also used in making beds and lovely official cabinets. They provide a great and pleasant environment for you to work.

When you order cedar furniture set always go for a double – pealed one since the second peal removes any knots or splinters and leaves a smooth and natural sheen. The second peel acts like a layer of protective coating like a varnish. This cedar furniture doesn’t require frequent washing and maintenance is not a big problem with Cedar made goods. You can subscribe an annual maintenance pack and this makes your life easy. Cedars are strong and durable wood which would provide you with the best environment for you to relax and enjoy. You would have the feel of a holiday in your own garden. So sit back and order Cedar furniture today!!

Is there a gardener you need to buy a gift for? Christmas is as great a reason as you can get to buy gifts for that special gardener. You don’t have to look far to find great gifts for gardeners. Every year there seem to be new gadgets coming out and several on-line websites have wonderful gardening gifts. A couple of them are www.gardenscape.on.ca/ and www.behnkes.com. Both sites have an abundance of unique gifts for the gardener. Local hardware or home improvement stores will also have a good line of gifts for that special gardener in your life.

Practical gifts such as a shovel or trowel, garden hoses or other digging and planting tools are most always welcomed but then there are also the whimsical items to add that extra special touch to a garden.

A basket full of goodies for the gardener is also a great gift idea. Buy one already made or personalize one by adding your own special touches. A basket with the essentials is a good choice. It could include gloves, poison oak/ivy medication, fertilizer, twister ties, rain gauge, and disposable towels etc. You could include an Old Farmers Almanac if your favorite gardener would appreciate such “old school” methods for finding the best time to plant their vegetables and flowers.

Gardening books may need to be on your shopping list. Gardening books can be found anywhere and found on an endless variety of topics. Choose among specialty garden books, such as vegetable gardens, wild flower gardens, or formal gardens. Maybe a book on the subject of perennials and annuals, which flowers are best suited for your climate? How about buying plants that are best suited for your soil type? The local bookstore will have a whole section devoted to gardening books, it’s big business.

Perhaps your gardener wants to attract butterflies or hummingbirds? Or maybe they will after reading a book you gave them for Christmas about the appropriate types of flowers to plant to draw them to the garden. You can also will different hummingbird feeders that will keep these beautiful birds coming back again and again.

Garden stones are another popular gift for gardeners. Garden stones can be unusual shapes, colorful, humorous and can be personalized. You can even get kits to make garden stones with a child’s hand print and their name added to it, a wonderful way to span the generations and bring the little ones into the gardening world. What a wonderful memories that would make for the child and the gardener. Round garden stones can be bought and painted with the family name to make an extra special gift for a garden lover. You can put the year the marriage was established or maybe the year that the garden was started. Your personalization can make even an ordinary gift something very special, a real tribute.

On the more practical side, there are countless gifts to choose from such as special boxes to store your garden hoses and hose carts. Fertilizer sprinklers and water sprinklers are also good gifts. A really cute water sprinkler I found was in the shape of a John Deere Tractor.

A popular item for gardens is the gazing ball, to be honest I just don’t get the attraction but many do. They’re found in all sizes and colors and add a fanciful touch to the garden. Holders for the gazing balls come in many shapes, sizes and materials. A favorite of many is a little angel holding a small gazing ball. Perhaps I need to “gaze” into one for a while and learn the attraction.

Wind spinners and flags are also popular for the gardener. Spinners are available in a variety of colors such as the rainbow spinner and a patriotic, red, white, and blue spinner. Flags can be changed throughout the year changing with the seasons. I was surprised to learn of the many varieties of garden flags. Their growing popularity is due to the ability to give the garden a different look by changing them frequently, with the seasons, the crops, or the weather.

Have a taste for the exotic? You can find exotic plants such as the amaryllis exotica, or unusual items such as the shitake mushroom log. How about an Italian herb garden or a ginkgo tree growing kit? You may be surprised to learn of all that is available.

Animal or angel statues of any size make great gifts. Birdbaths are another added attraction to a garden that never goes out of style. I guess because birds can add so much to a garden and can also help control insects. But whatever you decide on know the greatest gift is the thought you put into it. There are gifts out there for every gardener, it’s a growing world and you can never go wrong as long as your heart is in your gift.

If you are currently creating a children’s play area you may well have arrived at the point where you are wondering what type of filler is best. Below we have a closer look at some of the most popular material used for the surfaces of children’s play areas.

Play Bark

Many people avoid play bark because it as seen as being quite expensive. However there are many advantages to this product. It is 100% natural, it does not easily blow away and packs down well to make a kind of carpet effect. Just make sure that it is regularly raked to get rid of any unwanted foreign objects.

Recycled Coloured Woodchip
Recycled coloured woodchip is a great play area filler. Again may people find it on the pricey side but really it is value for money as its low moisture content means that it last 5 times longer than play bark product. A two inch layer of coloured woodchip is sufficient to block out sunlight and eradicate weed growth.

Pea Gravel
Pea Gravel is often used in playgrounds. It is definitely a cheaper alternative to woodchip or play bark. Furthermore pea gravel looks very nice and decorative. Consider using edging to keep the pea gravel contained.

Recycled Mulch
Grass and tree clippings can be ground up finely and turned into mulch. This recycled mulch is then used within children’s play areas. This option is good for limiting weed growth as the trees naturally have an in-built weed deterrent.

Artificial Grass Carpet
You could also consider using an artificial grass carpet. It dries quickly which means that the children will be able to play on it when the rest of the garden is still too wet. You can also remove it and place it elsewhere and clean it if need be.

It’s green; it’s slimy; it’s slippery. It’s growing on your lawn, your patio, your steps and walkways-even your roof and siding. If you’ve ever lived through several humid or wet days, you probably have had to deal with moss or algae.

“Dampness combined with heavy shade and poor air circulation are the ingredients that create moss and algae,” says Bayer Advanced™ Garden Expert Lance Walheim, who wrote the book “Lawn Care for Dummies” and is a regular contributor to Sunset magazine. “They make your house look dirty and on your patio, it’s easy for children or the elderly to slip and fall.”

Pruning trees to increase sunlight can help prevent moss and algae over the long run. Adjusting the pH of your soil can help reduce the green slime in your lawn. You can also spend a few hundred dollars a year to have the exterior of your home cleaned.

In the past, if you wanted to get rid of that nasty green stuff, the do-it-yourself approach required a scrub brush and a bucket of water mixed with bleach.

“Mixing bleach is always a challenge,” says Walheim. “You have to make it strong enough to get the job done but the fumes can be awfully strong too. You also have to scrub like crazy to get into all those nooks and crannies.”

Now, however, there is another alternative with no scrubbing required-Bayer Advanced 2-in-1 Moss and Algae Killer. This is a fast-acting moss, algae and lichen killer that can be applied to lawns, as well as steps and walkways, patios, shingles, stucco, wood decks and fences, roofs and even the exteriors of cars and boats.

On wood, concrete and asphalt, a single application of the product will control moss and algae for up to one year and it does not stain surfaces.

Have you experienced the frustration trying to grow plants that never grow? If you have, there may be some things to consider before you attempt to see growth happen again.

A first thing to considering as you try to plant seeds and see their growth is the location. Where will you grow the plants? What are the conditions of that area? If you attempt to grow plants outside, what is it like? If you are hoping to achieve plant growth inside, what kind of environment are you using for the growing? Be sure that you understand how wet, dry, sunny or cloudy your chosen areas are. Having a correct picture of these things will save you time and money as you begin to look for the right kinds of seeds and plants to experiment with.

It is important not only that you understand the environment in which you hope to see growth from your plants, but it is also important to choose the right kinds of seeds to plant. You must be careful to match a proper kind of seed with your environment. If you live somewhere that is dry and hot most of the time you should choose seeds that require a dry heat for maximum growth. Other varieties of plants will grow better in areas that are sunny but wet, and still others will have maximum growth in areas that are cool and wet. So learn your growth environment well and then choose plants wisely and accordingly. You will not see proper growth happen from even the best, most expensive varieties of plants if you have chosen a seed that does not match your growing environment.

Once you have determined the kinds of environments you have and you have selected the right kinds of seeds to plant you can begin the process of planting the seeds. Take some time to research this process. Are there particular kinds of soils that will bring growth quicker than others? Is there a plant food that will promote growth for your chosen varieties? These are important things to know. How much water does your plant require for healthy growth? Over or under watering a plant can quickly be the death of it.

Is this process sounding more complicated than you thought it would be? Take heart, you are almost on your way to seeing amazing growth from every seed you plant. The most important steps, if done properly, will almost ensure the results you are hoping for. Perhaps your best bet is to pick up a book on growth and planting from your library or from a friend. Learn as much as you can and then enjoy. Maybe you will want to start with some cheaper seeds first so that you can practice doing everything necessary for their growth before you spend too much money. Whatever you decide, just have fun. Determine the right environment for growth, pick the right seeds, then treat your seeds with the individual care they need. In no time you will be surrounded by a wealth of beautiful plants and flowers.

Time-strapped homeowners take heart-you can have an attractive lawn. Dedicating less than two hours a week to the average lawn can produce great results if you prioritize your tasks, says the nationally known “Yard Doctor,” Trey Rogers, Ph.D.

A recent survey revealed that consumers’ number one lawn care problem was finding enough time to care for their yards.

“Having a nice-looking yard is important to most homeowners,” explains Rogers, the Michigan State University turf scientist who has helped grow grass for the Olympic Games as well as for average homeowners. “But when busy schedules create a time crunch, you can prioritize your lawn care tasks and look for shortcuts that will still allow you to have a good-looking lawn.”

He suggests these time-savers:
Cut your lawn less often. Never “scalp” your lawn thinking you can mow less often. Letting grass grow a little longer is far healthier than mowing too close. Scalping damages the grass blades, preventing the damaged lawn from fending off pests, disease and weeds. When you mow, cut only a third of the length of the grass.

Water more efficiently. If you use manually placed sprinklers, set them properly the first time you use them so they water as much of your lawn as possible without sprinkling sidewalks or driveways. Mark the locations so you won’t have to guess the next time. If you can leave the sprinkler attached to a water hose, you save a few more minutes-just unreel the hose. Water in the morning (perhaps while you are getting ready for work or getting the kids off to school) to enhance absorption and avoid evaporation.

Get the kids to help. Put your kids in charge of easy yard care chores. Have them clear away all toys, sticks and other objects before you mow. They can also help with watering. Children should be out of the area and under supervision before you start to mow, however.

Fertilize once, when it can do the most good. If you only have time for one application a year, fertilize at the beginning of the growing season with a slow-release nitrogen fertilizer. It’s less likely to damage your lawn if your application technique is not perfect, and it will continue to work for weeks.

Keep your mower in good working order. Have it tuned up once a year or do it yourself (it takes 30 minutes or less; learn how at www.yardsmarts.com).

The Yard Doctor is part of the Briggs & Stratton Yard Smarts program, created to help homeowners achieve the yard they really want to have by providing knowledge and inspiration on lawn and yard care.

If you are pressed for time but want your yard to look nice, mow the front lawn first and the back in a day or two.

Adding a garden can be the perfect way to spice up any home or office lawn. We have all seen enough boring lawns that have nothing other than a tree or a bush here and there. If you have some extra time on your hands this year, why not try getting creative by coming up with a garden design for your lawn and then getting to work making it happen.

If the idea of coming up with a garden design for your property sounds overwhelming, then get some help. There are countless numbers of landscape architects and professional gardening aides that will be more than happy to assist you in coming up with the best garden design for your needs and that fit your tastes. Do a quick search through the yellow pages or do an internet search to discover different options for getting help with your garden design.

There are things to be aware of when planning your garden design. First, consider honestly what kind of budget you can afford to put toward creating a garden design. Do not let the huge gardens of your neighbors or friends intimidate you. There is no shame in starting small. The important thing is to know your own budget and then to stick to it. Creating a garden design can get out of hand as quickly as any other home project can.

Another thing to be aware of when planning your garden design is what kind of time – realistically – you have to put in to tending your garden. Again, don’t get caught in the trap of comparison here. Your garden design must simply be fit to your own needs and schedule. Don’t get in over your head with a garden design that will take far too many hours to tend. If, however, money is not an issue, than you can always considering hiring someone to attend to the fruit of your garden design each week. Just be realistic and plan a garden design that truly fits your schedule.

Adding a garden can be one of the best things for your home or office lawn. Just do it with care. Read up on gardens and learn about the most strategic ways to create a garden design for your particular climate and soil type. There are many details to consider when making a garden design, so do it carefully and you’ll be enjoying the benefits of a beautiful garden for years to come.

All over the country, geraniums flaunt their red and scarlet, rose, pink, and white blooms with a gay abandon that few other plants can rival. In boxes on city fire escapes and rooftops, in window boxes on suburban and country houses, in tubs and pots on terraces and patios, and in hanging baskets of the porches of summer cottages, they are beloved and cherished plants

It needs sun to bloom; it tolerates shade, where it is usually handled as a foliage plant. What it resents is too much moisture and a rich diet. Kept too wet, the leaves turn yellow; given a heavy soil, one high in nitrogen plants go to foliage and flower sparingly.

Even if you choose no other plants, you could have a varied potted garden of single and double zonal, fancy-leaved or variegated, scented-leaved, ivy and Lady or Martha Washington geraniums (also called show or fancy geraniums), not to mention a few oddities of cactus and climbing types.

The zonal geranium is characterized by dark circular markings on the rounded green leaves. Double types dominate the trade and are offered by florists in the spring for planting in gardens and window boxes.

Variegated geraniums, with leaves that are often brilliantly colored, are attractive even out of bloom. Set among green-leaved geraniums and other foliage plants, pots of the variegated plants add color and pattern.

The trailing, ivy-leaved geraniums are among the most profuse flowering when grown under favorable conditions. They dislike shade and high humidity and thrive best in climates with warm days and cool nights, as in California.

Lady Washington’s, considered the handsomest of geraniums, are not so easy to grow. Like the ivy-leaved, they prefer cool nights and warm, sunny days, preferring shelter from wind and all-day sun.

If you are a geranium gardener, you may want to spark your pot plant collection with some cactus and climbing geraniums. They will give you bizarre and fascinating forms and flowers and are certain to arouse comment.

Geraniums flourish and look well in pots, boxes, and planters. They thrive in various soil mixtures if drainage is good. For abundant bloom, however, supply a special preparation, not high in nitrogen, or lush foliage and few blooms will result. I have success with good garden soil and a sprinkling of a 5-10-5 fertilizer and bone meal. During the growing season, plants respond to a low-nitrogen fertilizer in liquid form.

When potting, be generous with drainage material to insure free passage of water. As with any plant, always water with care, since too much or not enough can be harmful. The best rule is to water when the surface of the soil feels dry. Then soak the soil well and do not water again until plants need it. If soil is kept too wet, leaves will turn yellow; if too dry they wilt and discolor.

To maintain even plant growth, turn containers from time to time. Remove yellow leaves and faded blossoms which are especially distracting on plants at doorways or any other key spots. If rain rots and disfigures the center florets of the heads, pull them off with your fingers, leaving the unmarred outer florets and buds.

If you want plants for next spring, take two- to four-inch cuttings in August or early September. Look for mature stems (with leaves spaced close together) that break easily like a snap bean. Woody growth is hard to root and succulent tips tend to rot. Before planting spread out cuttings in a shady place for several hours so leaves will lose excess moisture.

When ready to plant, cut off the lower leaves, allowing but two or three to each cutting. Also pull off the little wings on the stem, since they are inclined to rot. Dip stem ends in hydrated lime to prevent decay and then insert about halfway, in a flat or large pot of pure sand or a mixture of sand and peat moss. With geraniums, rooting powders are hardly necessary. When cuttings develop inch-long roots, they are ready for spacing out in another flat or for separate planting in 2½-inch pots. Fill with a mixture of three parts sandy loam and one part peat moss or leaf mold. After planting, keep in the shade for the first few days, and bring indoors before cold weather.

When the separated cuttings have developed strong root systems, shift to 3½- or 4-inch pots. Use the same potting mixture as before, with bone meal added. Later as established plants begin to grow, feed periodically with a high phosphorous fertilizer, as 5-10-5 or 4-12-8.

To keep plants bushy and to encourage branching, pinch while small, starting when they are three to four inches high. Provide sunny windows, and keep turning pots to prevent lopsided growth. Water regularly, but allow soil to dry out just a little between applications

Plants may be wintered in cool cellars with little light. Remember only that the less light, the cooler the temperatures should be. This is because too much warmth and insufficient light cause lanky growth that undermines a healthy plant.

Gardeners with cellars or sheds when temperatures remain above freezing, can winter geraniums hanging upside down from the ceiling. The dead-looking sticks, set out in pots or in the garden in warm weather, will astound you when they develop into glorious flowering plants.

Bonsai trees need care similar to any other plant below is a basic outline of care for a Bonsai tree.

Lighting
Many people do not realize that most bonsai trees should be kept outdoors year round. The few exceptions are the non-traditional tropical trees which need kept inside if you are not in a tropical environment.

Outdoor bonsai should be positioned where they will get six or more hours of light each day.

Indoor bonsai should receive two to four hours of natural or artificial sunlight. For inside bonsai full spectrum flourescents can provide the necessary light levels but the tree needs to be placed close to the light.

Watering
More trees die from a lack of water or low humidity than anything. The soil used to raise bonsai is normally a porous soil that drains well. The type of soil as well as the shape and design of the pot will affect quickly the soil dries out. Different tree types will require different amounts of water to thrive. You will need to research your specific species of tree for a general guideline and then closely monitor how the tree grows to determine if it is being watered correctly. If you take your pot and place it on top of some rocks in a tray full of water this will help increase the humidity around the tree and will aid in it’s growth. Along with normal watering about once a week you should fully submerge the bonsai tree pot until no more bubbles escape from the pot or the soil.

Pruning
Pruning serves dual purpose in the care of bonsai trees. Pruning removes branches that clutter and hamper the aestestic design of the tree. Pruning is also used to direct and control the growth of the tree. You will also have fine pruning such a s pinching and leaf pruning to help encourage branching. Always remember when you are pruning your bonsai that you can always remove something later but it is very difficult to put it back after you have cut it. So if in doubt leave it for now. You should start with a light pruning then give it two or three weeks and wait for the bounce back to decide if you need to do more. pay special attention to developing the trunk, any where on the trunk that a branch is allowed to grow will thicken. When pruning you need to keep the top and bottom (roots) balanced for optimum results.

Fertilizing
Your average bonsai will need fertilized once or twice a month. You should only fertelise during the normal growing season. Us a water soluble ferterlizer and apply it when the soil is already wet.

Soil
Proper soil choice is critical optimum bonsai tree care, the soil affects the roots, feeding, and watering of your tree. The size and shape of the pot affects both the appearance as well as growth and health of the bonsai. As a rule of thumb be about 3/4 as wide as the tree is tall and about half as deep. The height of the pot should be roughly the same as the diameter of the trunk. Bonsai soils are designed to optimize drainage. They are usually a mix of coarse sand or gravel with peat or bark added for an organic element. Different trees will need various ratios of grit to humus. Usually dedidious trees need about 70% humus and 30% grit while evergreens will thrive better with 30% humus and 70% grit.

Re-potting
Re-potting is a critical element of bonsai care. It is crucial to help keep the roots and top of the tree in balance. Bonsai trees should be re-potted every two or three years. When you re-pot the bonsai you need to trim the roots. You will normally want to remove about 1/3 of the root ball. You need to trim all away around the ball to keep it in balance.

A gazebo can be a wonderful addition to a backyard landscape, adding an aesthetic appeal as well as a comfortable relaxation spot. If you are thinking about adding a gazebo to your backyard decor, you will want to consider the location where you plan to place your new structure.

Gazebo location is going to depend to a large extent on what you are planning to use your gazebo for. Is it a garden gazebo, a gathering place for friends and family on beautiful summer afternoons? Perhaps you’ll be enclosing your gazebo and installing a hot tub or spa inside of it. How you use your gazebo will determine where you should build it. A garden gazebo might be located toward the back of your yard, in order to have friends walk through it. A hot tub shelter should probably be located closer to the door, to minimize the walk in a bathing suit.

Aesthetics are important: you may choose to highlight your structure by making it the center of attention or blend it in to your landscape and make it a secret hideaway. You should also be mindful of the building’s relation to other structures that you may have on your property.

Think about the pros and cons of your preferred site in all four seasons. The surrounding foliage (and weather) can look very different from one season to the next. All of these considerations may have some impact on where you build your gazebo.

Choosing a size for your gazebo is the next important step. The key is to ensure that your space is large enough for its intended purposes, while remaining proportional to the surrounding environment. A general rule of thumb is that an 8′ gazebo fits 2 people (2 chairs) and a small table. With every two-foot addition, two more people can be seated comfortably in the gazebo (for example, a 10′ gazebo holds 4 people comfortably, a 12′ gazebo holds 6 people comfortably, etc.).

Once you have decided on a size, it’s a good idea to stake it out the dimensions in your yard to ensure that the fit is comfortable for your needs and that the location is harmonious with your landscape.
